Without quoting sources, a French magazine has claimed the Vatican Commission on Medjugorje will publish its findings this year. But neither Medjugorje’s parish office nor the Diocese of Mostar has been informed that a date of publication is near, and the claim seems baseless so far.

Despite a widespread circulation of French news report, there are as few signs of an approaching publication of results from the Vatican Commission on Medjugorje now as there were last month or week.

In spite of quoting no sources, be they official or anonymous, the French weekly Catholic magazine La Vie was quoted worldwide on December 4, to the effect that Commission’s conclusions are near. But both Medjugorje’s information office and the Diocese of Mostar react to the claims by telling the Bosnian news portal klix.ba they have not received any information about the publication of results.

Generally, La Vie has been believed to base its article on statements from February by Cardinal Vinko Puljic of Sarajevo, a member of the Vatican Commission. Without talking about a publication of results, Cardinal Puljic told a press conference that the Commission “must finish our work this year”.

This does not necessarily imply that the Commission’s results will be made public by the time when they are ready. Headed by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the Commission will formally hand over its results to the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith whose members may or may not add comments of their own before presenting the results to Pope Benedict XVI.

It has never been mentioned exactly when in this process the Commission’s findings will be published.
